Nigeria’s Largest Built-Up Urban Areas, According to Satellite Mapping
Satellite mapping measures Nigeria’s cities by their continuous built-up area rather than state boundaries or administrative land size. This can produce a very different ranking from conventional population or municipal-area lists. Lagos has the largest urban footprint, stretching beyond Lagos State into parts of Ogun State, including the Sango-Ota, Ifo, Mowe, Ibafo and Akute corridors. The Greater Onitsha-Nnewi area follows, with dense development linking Onitsha, Asaba, nearby towns and commercial corridors across Anambra and Delta states. Other major built-up areas listed are Greater Ibadan, Kano, Abuja and its satellite towns, Port Harcourt, Aba, Kaduna, Benin City and Maiduguri. The estimates depend on how each satellite study defines a continuous urban area, so the exact order and land-area figures may vary between datasets.
