Kano Sanitation Board Warns Roadside Traders Over Waste Dumping, Threatens Prosecution

The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board has warned roadside traders against dumping refuse on roads and in drainage channels. The board said sellers of roasted or boiled maize and other food items along major roads, including France, Katsina, Maiduguri, Zaria and Zoo roads, must provide waste bins for their businesses. It noted that maize husks, cobs and other litter often block waterways and worsen pollution. REMASAB said it carries out daily street sweeping and refuse evacuation, but some traders dump waste shortly afterwards. The agency said it will enforce sanitation laws and prosecute offenders, while maintaining that traders are free to operate provided they keep their surroundings clean.
