Sowore Tells Datti: Babangida’s Record on June 12 and Dele Giwa Cannot Be Forgotten

Omoyele Sowore has criticised Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed for defending former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, saying compassion for an elderly former leader should not erase public scrutiny of his record. Sowore said Nigerians must continue to confront the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which denied the presumed winner, MKO Abiola, the mandate. He argued that Babangida’s later acknowledgement of Abiola’s victory did not undo the damage caused by the annulment. He also referenced the unresolved controversy surrounding the 1986 parcel-bomb killing of journalist Dele Giwa. Sowore said accountability and compassion can coexist, while Datti had urged a more humane approach in political discourse.
