Teachers’ Day 2026: Can AI Transform Nigerian Classrooms Without Better Teacher Welfare?
Artificial intelligence is entering Nigerian classrooms, but many teachers still lack adequate pay, training, facilities and professional recognition. Education stakeholders say technology can improve learning only when educators are equipped to use it responsibly. The Federal Ministry of Education says the 2026 Teachers’ Day programme will focus on innovation, mobility, AI, inclusion and professional excellence. It has also digitalised the selection of 14 award recipients, with prizes including cars for the top three teachers, laptops and a bus for the best Federal Unity College. Government initiatives include a professional development programme targeting 250,000 unqualified teachers through the National Teachers’ Institute and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. Teachers’ representatives, however, argue that awards and standards must be matched by better salaries, career progression, training and working conditions. The central question is whether Nigeria can use AI to support personalised learning and reduce administrative work while preserving teachers’ professional judgement, mentorship and vital human connection with learners.
