If God Is Light, Why Does Scripture Say He Created Darkness?

Isaiah says God creates darkness, while the New Testament describes Him as pure light. Does this mean the same God authors both light and darkness? Scripture also presents God as light, fire, lamp and sun, yet says clouds and darkness surround Him. Darkness need not always mean evil or the absence of light. It can represent mystery, concealment and a lower realm of glory. Job speaks of a place where even light is like darkness, while the Psalms say darkness is as light before God. God remains pure and without moral darkness, even where His presence is hidden from human understanding. Light and darkness may also serve different purposes in creation. Darkness gives the moon, stars, lightning and fireflies a setting in which to shine. It can also shield weaker eyes from overwhelming brightness. Evil became associated with darkness after the fall, but darkness itself was part of God’s created order.
