WHO: Hepatitis-Related Liver Disease Kills One Person Every 30 Seconds

The World Health Organization has urged governments and health partners to accelerate efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis and reduce liver cancer deaths. The call came as the world marks World Hepatitis Day on July 28, 2026. WHO says hepatitis-related liver disease or liver cancer kills one person every 30 seconds. Hepatitis B, C and D can become chronic infections, raising the risk of cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer. More than 300 million people live with these infections globally, while many do not know they are infected. Progress has been made in national action plans, testing policies for pregnant women and hepatitis B birth-dose vaccination. However, major gaps remain in prevention, diagnosis and treatment. WHO says expanding vaccination, testing, harm-reduction services and affordable treatment could save 2.8 million lives and prevent 9.8 million new infections by 2030.
