NCC Warns Booksellers: Selling Pirated Books Can Attract Fines and Arrest
The Nigerian Copyright Commission has warned publishers and booksellers against buying, selling, storing or distributing pirated books. At a copyright sensitisation programme for booksellers and publishers in Ondo and Ekiti states, the commission said piracy deprives authors of income, encourages substandard publishing and harms Nigeria’s creative economy. The commission said a copyright violation can attract a fine of at least ₦10,000 per pirated copy, depending on the severity of the offence. It added that obstructing officials during an inspection may attract a ₦100,000 fine. Booksellers were urged to buy only from legitimate publishers, authorised distributors and reputable suppliers. They should also seek guidance when they are unsure of a book’s source.
