Strait of Hormuz Talks Postponed as Gulf States and US Differ on Reopening Plan
Planned talks between Gulf diplomats and Iranian officials on reopening the Strait of Hormuz to regular tanker traffic have been postponed indefinitely. Oman said the meeting, due to hold in Salalah, was delayed to allow for wider regional consensus. The discussions were expected to consider an Omani framework covering shipping routes, navigational safety and possible voluntary contributions. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states reportedly raised concerns that parts of the proposal could create an unacceptable new arrangement or financially benefit Iran. The United States was not due to take part in the meeting. Washington has continued military escorts for some tankers and says future talks with Iran should focus on its nuclear programme. Commercial shipping through the waterway remains disrupted, while diplomats say a lasting agreement is still needed to reduce pressure on global energy supplies.
