INEC Says DSS Foiled Alleged Plot Targeting NYSC Members Ahead of 2027 Polls
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan says the DSS has uncovered an alleged plot targeting the commission’s ad hoc staff, particularly NYSC members, ahead of the 2027 general election. He said suspects linked to the plot had been arrested and would face prosecution. Speaking at a South-East zonal staff meeting in Enugu, Amupitan said INEC would hold a security conference to address wider election-security concerns. He said the commission was strengthening its work with security agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security. The chairman also identified voter apathy, public distrust and misinformation as major threats to credible elections. He said INEC would rely on faster official communication, transparency and stricter operational standards at polling units. Amupitan warned that partisan conduct, negligence, extortion and ethical breaches by election officials would not be tolerated. He reminded staff and participating security personnel of their duty to remain neutral under the Electoral Act.
