If Islam Means Submission, Do Muslims Submit to Allah or Muhammad?

I would like Muslims to point to a Qur'anic passage where Allah gave Muhammad a direct command that he found difficult or uncomfortable, yet obeyed without a change to the command. I see several instances that appear to move in the opposite direction. These include the marriage to Zaynab, the change of the prayer direction from Jerusalem to the Kaaba, Muhammad's marital exemptions, permission concerning captives and conflict, and the reduction of daily prayers from fifty to five. I also question how the shahada fits with the claim that Islam predates Muhammad through earlier prophets. Those prophets did not know Muhammad as Allah's messenger or recite a declaration that includes his messengership. My conclusion is that submitting to Allah in Islam also requires submitting to Muhammad's words and example. So, between Allah and Muhammad, who do Muslims ultimately submit to?
