Senior Nigerian Army Commander Lt. Col. Umar Farouq Killed in Boko Haram Raid
Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, commanding officer at a Kukawa military base in Borno State, was confirmed killed after Boko Haram militants launched a fierce assault. Reports say the insurgents overran the camp, torched vehicles, and seized ammunition. The attack in Kukawa followed near-simultaneous strikes on bases in Konduga, Mainok, Jakana, and Marte town. Militants held positions for hours without air support, killing soldiers and destroying armoured tanks. This loss comes less than 72 hours after Boko Haram killed another senior officer, Lt. Col. S. I. Iliyasu, during an attack in Konduga. In recent months, the group has intensified assaults on military posts and nearby communities. Military sources assert that troops repelled many of these raids under Operation Hadin Kai, inflicting heavy casualties on Boko Haram. Despite this, the insurgents’ coordinated offensives continue to strain security efforts in North East Nigeria.
