Kaduna Centre Seeks Inclusive Education and Skills Training for Children With Disabilities
Open Arms Children’s Development Centre in Kaduna has called on government, private organisations and other stakeholders to expand support for children with developmental disabilities. At an Independence Day funfair, the centre said inclusive education, vocational training and better access to opportunities can help children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and learning disabilities become more independent. The centre said its pupils are learning daily living skills, reading and writing, while some have moved on to other schools. Its vocational programme currently offers sewing, with plans for computer and photography training. The director identified a shortage of trained special-needs teachers, stigma and discrimination as major challenges. She appealed for support to secure a permanent facility designed for the children’s learning needs.
