11 Nigerian Women Recall Being Catcalled and Harassed in Secondary School

Eleven women recount the sexual harassment and catcalling they experienced while in secondary school. Several say adult men and older boys targeted them on the road, near school gates, at bus stops and even while they wore their uniforms. Their stories describe how unwanted sexual comments, stalking, groping and intimidation left them scared, ashamed and confused about their bodies. Some were blamed for their appearance, while others found support from friends, family members and strangers who intervened. The accounts highlight how normalising harassment of schoolgirls can cause lasting harm and why adults, schools and communities must take it seriously.
