INEC Needs Financial Autonomy to Be Truly Independent, Amupitan Says

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, says the electoral commission cannot be fully independent without financial autonomy. He warned that relying on the normal budgetary process could weaken INEC’s ability to run free, fair and credible elections. According to Vanguard, he made the remarks while delivering a keynote address at the public presentation of a book on Nigeria’s democratic journey. Amupitan said INEC’s mandate goes beyond conducting elections. It also covers voter registration, political party monitoring and the voters’ register. He added that credible elections will require cooperation from political parties, security agencies, the media, civil society and citizens ahead of the 2027 polls.
