Lagos Sets December 31 Deadline for Residents to Get Health Insurance
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says residents, employers and employees must obtain health insurance by December 31, 2026. The state will begin enforcing the policy on January 1, 2027. The governor announced the deadline at the launch of the enforcement programme in Victoria Island. He also introduced the Lagos Private Health Plans, which are intended to cover salaried workers and corporate organisations, while Ilera Eko continues to serve vulnerable residents and informal-sector workers. Sanwo-Olu said hospitals must stabilise emergency patients before discussing payment or insurance coverage. Twenty-one HMOs have joined the private plans, while the state has increased its Health Equity Fund from ₦1 billion to ₦3 billion to support insurance for more than 500,000 residents who cannot afford premiums.
