Nigeria Clears UN Dues as Ambassador Jimoh Leads 2027 Budget Negotiations
Nigeria has paid its assessed contribution to the United Nations’ 2026 regular budget and made substantial payments towards its peacekeeping obligations, totalling about $6.3 million. Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ibrahim Jimoh, announced the payment while chairing the General Assembly’s Fifth Committee during discussions on the proposed $3.302 billion UN budget for 2027. He urged member states to pay their dues promptly to support the organisation’s work. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the proposed budget covers 11,150 posts and is about $40.8 million lower than the approved 2026 budget. He warned that delayed payments were weakening UN operations amid conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate disruption and widening geopolitical divisions. The proposal also includes staff reductions, restructuring and the relocation of 44 functions across 12 UN entities, with Nairobi expected to receive the largest share.
