Why I Believe a Nigerian Hay Board Could Help Curb Farmer-Herder Clashes
I believe a proposed Nigerian Hay Board could help address farmer-herder clashes by encouraging more settled cattle rearing. Herders could keep cattle in designated locations and buy hay as feed instead of moving across farmlands in search of grazing. The idea would require farmers to turn maize stalks and other crop residue into hay for sale. It would also need storage facilities, training and organised local markets for hay producers and livestock owners. I also believe the hay industry could create jobs, expand dairy production and generate significant revenue for Nigeria. However, these projected benefits would depend on strong planning, funding, enforcement and support from farmers and herders.
