Cost of Cooking Jollof Rice Falls to ₦26,178, SBM Reports
The average cost of cooking one pot of jollof rice in Nigeria fell by 11.5% between June and September 2026, according to SBM Intelligence. The cost dropped from ₦29,578 to ₦26,178, the biggest quarterly decline recorded since the index began in 2016. Lower prices for chicken, beef and vegetable oil drove the reduction. Chicken and beef account for about ₦13,800 of the total cost, while rice prices changed only slightly. The index tracks a standard basket of ingredients across 13 markets in the six geopolitical zones. The decline was not the same everywhere. Costs fell sharply in Lagos markets, while Port Harcourt recorded a 2.6% increase linked to flooding. Despite the quarterly drop, cooking a pot of jollof still costs 5.8% more than it did in September 2025. What does it cost in your area?
