Assessing Obafemi Hamzat’s Track Record in Lagos
Obafemi Hamzat’s Lagos public-service record spans technology, infrastructure and his current role as deputy governor. His tenure as Commissioner for Science and Technology was linked to government digitisation, Oracle-based administrative systems and efforts to tackle ghost workers, though the scale of his personal contribution is difficult to verify fully. As Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure from 2011 to 2015, Hamzat oversaw the ministry during the completion of the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge. The bridge was conceived before his appointment and delivered by the wider Lagos State government, ministry officials and contractors. He also said the state built or rehabilitated 281 roads during his four years in the portfolio, a figure that should be treated as a ministry claim pending a verifiable project list. Since becoming deputy governor in 2019, Hamzat has been part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s wider infrastructure programme. Projects such as the Lagos Blue Line were completed during this period, but they were initiated under earlier administrations and developed over many years. Overall, Hamzat has a documented record in government technology, road infrastructure and executive administration. The available evidence supports his involvement in major state projects, while also showing the need to distinguish his individual role from the work of successive Lagos administrations.
