What Age Is Safe for Children to Start Going to the Gym?

Many Nigerian parents are asking when children can safely begin gym workouts. There is no single age that suits every child. Readiness depends on physical development, maturity, interest and proper supervision. For children under seven, exercise should be fun and active. Running, swimming, cycling, football, dancing, climbing and outdoor play are better than formal weight training. Children aged seven to 12 can learn simple movements such as squats, lunges, push-ups, balance drills and light resistance exercises with knowledgeable adult guidance. Teenagers can gradually take on more structured gym routines, but proper technique must come before heavier weights. Young people should not train like adults or chase bodybuilding goals. Parents should watch for pain, poor form, extreme weightlifting, poor eating habits or an unhealthy obsession with body size. A gym membership is not required for a child to be fit. The aim is to build a healthy, enjoyable relationship with movement that lasts into adulthood. At what age would you allow your child to start supervised gym training?
