Ramaphosa’s Ankole Heifer Sets South African Record at $385,000
Queen Arusha, an in-calf Ankole heifer from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Ntaba Nyoni cattle operation, sold for R6.4 million at an auction in Limpopo Province. The reported $385,000 price is the highest ever paid for a female animal of any cattle breed in South Africa. The buyer, who was not identified, paid for access to Queen Arusha’s valuable bloodline and future genetic production. She is the full sister of Optimus Prime, an Ankole bull known for its 1.73-metre horns. The sale accounted for more than 28% of the auction’s R22.5 million total turnover. Other genetics from the same bloodline also attracted major bids, including sexed semen from Optimus Prime that sold for R250,000 per straw.
