Court Dismisses Akwa Ibom Government’s Suit Challenging EFCC Investigative Powers
A Federal High Court in Uyo has dismissed a suit by the Akwa Ibom State Government challenging the EFCC’s power to investigate the state’s financial activities. The dispute began after petitions alleged that state resources were diverted from welfare and development purposes. The EFCC opened an investigation and invited some state officials for questioning. The state Attorney-General challenged the investigation at both the Akwa Ibom State High Court and the Federal High Court. The EFCC objected to the federal case, arguing that a similar matter was already pending before the state court. Justice M.A. Onyetenu upheld the EFCC’s preliminary objection, bringing a major development in the long-running legal dispute.
