Lagos Developers Demand 100-Year Plan to Protect and Grow Coastline

The Shoreline Developers Association of Lagos has called for a 50- to 100-year master plan for the state’s coastline. The group warned that uncoordinated reclamation and rapid waterfront real-estate development could threaten Lagos’ environment and long-term economic prospects. Its president said waterfront property values have risen sharply in the past five years, attracting investors whose focus is often limited to profit and land reclamation. He argued that Lagos needs science-based planning, stronger environmental safeguards, drainage infrastructure and improved coordination among agencies overseeing shoreline development. The association said the coastline offers opportunities beyond sand-filling, including fisheries, offshore wind power, coastal rail, marina projects, port logistics and eco-tourism. It also urged the protection of mangroves and islands, while calling for preparations for the development impact of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. The group described Lagos’ coastline as a major economic asset but warned that sea-level rise, storm surges and land subsidence require urgent, sustainable action.
