Omotola Debate: Why Coaching Should Come Before Reporting

I have followed the discussion around veteran actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and the resurfaced interview clip about an actress allegedly struggling with Yoruba/Egun pronunciation on a Hollywood set. From my experience as a former music producer, I believe language coaching can make a major difference. While producing “Daddy Moh,” I worked with Joan Emi, an Ijaw singer, on Igbo pronunciations, tone and exclamations. We rehearsed until the delivery sounded natural to most listeners. Language accuracy matters in film, but mentorship matters too. Rather than reporting a colleague first, a senior actor can offer brief guidance where possible. Nollywood grew through actors learning from one another across languages and cultures. Africans working abroad should pursue excellence while also creating room to support and teach one another.
