Pay ₦1 Million for a Federal Job or Start a Business? The Cost of Normalising Bribery
The debate over paying ₦1 million to secure a federal job exposes a troubling reality. A private payment for a job that should be awarded on merit may be bribery, exploitation or a recruitment scam. It should not be treated as a normal investment to recover through salary. When public jobs go to those who can pay, qualified Nigerians without money are excluded. Institutions lose competent workers, while public service becomes a marketplace instead of an opportunity based on fairness and ability. Anyone asked to pay privately for a government appointment should first verify that the recruitment is genuine and that any fee is officially authorised. Where it is safe, suspicious demands should be reported. No Nigerian should have to buy access to a job they are qualified to do.
