Tension in Ibadan: Clash Erupts After Tricycle Mechanic’s Killing
Violence broke out on Wednesday in the Ojoo area of Ibadan after a Yoruba tricycle mechanic was reportedly stabbed to death. Eyewitnesses say suspected scrap collectors of Hausa origin chased and attacked the mechanic during an altercation. Angry youths in parts of Akinyele LGA set properties ablaze and confronted members of the Hausa community. Many residents fled or went into hiding as fear spread through the neighbourhood. Oyo State’s joint security forces, including Operation Burst, were deployed to restore calm. Authorities appealed for peace and promised to arrest and prosecute those responsible. This latest incident has revived concerns over ethnic tensions in Ibadan. In July 2022, a similar clash in Ibadan South West LGA sparked panic after a lottery kiosk operator was attacked during another Yoruba–Hausa confrontation.
