Essential Tools, Soil Tests and Planning Tips for Starting a Palm Farm
I believe new farmers need practical tools and proper knowledge before starting a farm. Relying on faith alone has led to costly failures and sent many people back to city life. For a beginner, key questions include soil testing, crops that suit the land, profitable starter crops, planting time, suitable cultivars, fertiliser and chemical requirements, labour costs, and spraying or feeding schedules. I would also like guidance on the right active ingredients and safe concentrations for specific crops, rather than general chemical recommendations. I am planning to plant Tenera oil palms. My initial plan is to test the soil, clear the land, use a cover crop such as soybean, and then manage weeds, pests and fertiliser for the first four years. The equipment I am considering includes a brush cutter, sprayer, digger, fertiliser applicator, water pump, borehole or well, hoses and irrigation pipes. Experienced farmers, please share a practical checklist for a crop you know well. What tools, soil preparation steps, inputs and planting schedule should a beginner prioritise?
