Atiku and Obi Yet to Commit to August Summit on 2027 Opposition Coalition

Efforts to unite Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election are facing early uncertainty, as key figures including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have yet to commit to a proposed coalition summit in Abuja on August 18. The Group of 100 Nigerians, led by former APC chieftain Salisu Lukman, is urging opposition leaders to agree on a common candidate and strategy against President Bola Tinubu and the APC. The group argues that a divided opposition could split votes and weaken its chances in 2027. Atiku’s camp says he supports a transparent, inclusive and democratic coalition process, but has not confirmed his attendance. Peter Obi’s Obidient Movement also says he has been invited and will decide whether to attend. While both camps back broader opposition cooperation, the major question remains whether leading contenders will agree to surrender their separate platforms for a single candidate.
