Nigeria Makes Strong Case to Host African Monetary Institute in 2026
Nigeria has stepped up its bid to host the African Union’s African Monetary Institute (AMI) ahead of its 2026 launch. At the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington D.C., the Federal Ministry of Finance highlighted Abuja’s ready infrastructure and full political backing. Minister of Finance Wale Edun emphasised that Nigeria has moved from policy pledges to concrete preparations, including securing office facilities for the institute. Central Bank representatives also reaffirmed the country’s ability to meet all host country obligations. AU and AfDB officials described the AMI as a critical step toward monetary integration, exchange rate stability and a single African currency. Nigeria is finalising agreements with the African Union to ensure a seamless take-off of the institute within the planned timeline.
