Who Spoke the Truth in Eden? A Reflection on Life, Death and Redemption
I reflect on the question of who spoke truthfully in Eden about the forbidden tree. In this interpretation, Adam was created with both a physical body and a spiritual glory that enabled him to live in God’s presence. After Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree, I understand the first experience of death as the loss of that glory and spiritual sight. They became afraid, aware of their nakedness, and unable to endure God’s manifest presence as before. I also view humanity’s labour, suffering, ageing and eventual return to dust as further consequences of the fall. Through Jesus Christ’s death, resurrection and ascension, I believe redemption changed the destiny of those who remain faithful to Him—from death toward resurrection and eternal life.
