Iran’s Soaring Inflation Leaves Workers Struggling Despite Minimum-Wage Increase — 1 of 2

A report on Iran’s worsening cost-of-living crisis says workers are facing poor pay, long hours and limited job opportunities after months of war, sanctions and disruption to trade. A teacher in Tehran said many graduates are now searching for any job they can find just to afford food, rent, transport and healthcare. Official figures cited in the report put annual inflation at about 88 percent, while food prices were said to be more than double their level a year earlier. Youth unemployment was reported at 23.4 percent, and many people are relying on informal work or small online businesses to survive. Iran’s monthly minimum wage is reportedly about 166 million rials, roughly $88. Yet even the country’s cheapest locally made cars can cost up to 10 billion rials. In my view, it is troubling that a resource-rich country has left many citizens facing such hardship amid years of conflict, sanctions and economic mismanagement.
