FBI Tells US Court Releasing Some Tinubu Records Could Endanger Lives

The FBI has asked a US district court to allow it file a sealed, judge-only explanation for withholding parts of records sought in relation to past drug-trafficking allegations involving President Bola Tinubu. The agency said publicly explaining its reliance on some Freedom of Information Act exemptions could reveal law-enforcement techniques or reasonably endanger a person’s life or physical safety. The requests include the FBI’s full file on Tinubu and interview records from a 1992–1993 case. The lawsuit was filed by Aaron Greenspan after several US agencies declined to confirm or deny whether the requested records existed. In April 2025, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the FBI and DEA could no longer maintain that refusal without providing stronger evidence for it. The FBI said it would provide its detailed explanation under seal if the court grants its application. The case concerns the release of records, not a new criminal charge or finding against Tinubu.
