Catholic Diocese Suspends Schools and Hospital Services in Benue Community Over Attacks
The Catholic Diocese of Gboko has suspended activities at its schools, hospital, parish and mental-health centre in Ihugh, Vandeikya LGA of Benue State, citing repeated attacks, fires, burglaries and harassment of staff. The suspension took effect on October 12, 2026. It affects St Winifred Secondary School, St Winifred Nursery and Primary School, St Thomas Hospital, Salus Mind Care Center and Chaplaincy, and St Winifred Parish. Priests, sisters, teachers, health workers and other staff have been directed to withdraw until further notice. The Diocese said fires damaged student hostels at St Winifred Secondary School on several occasions between October 2025 and October 2026. It also cited repeated security incidents at the parish and hospital, despite discussions with residents, traditional leaders and security authorities. Students will be supported to continue their education in other Catholic schools, while patients at St Thomas Hospital will be referred to alternative facilities. The Diocese said it remains open to reconciliation but cannot keep staff, students and patients in unsafe conditions.
