Resident Doctors Threaten Strike Over Alarming Attacks on Healthcare Workers
The National Association of Resident Doctors has warned it may no longer guarantee industrial peace if the Federal Government fails to act on a rising wave of violence, intimidation and assaults against doctors and health workers. In a statement by its chairman, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, NARD cited at least 17 hospitals—including University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UCH Ibadan and UNTH Enugu—where staff have faced brutal attacks by miscreants and even security operatives in the past year. Over 90% of victims received only apology letters despite severe injuries, trauma and damage to personal belongings. Few assailants have been arrested, but none has been decisively prosecuted to deter future assaults. NARD has called on federal and state authorities, security agencies, civil society and hospital management to treat this as a national emergency. It demands immediate prosecution of perpetrators, compensation for victims, enhanced hospital security and a presidential order mandating strict penalties. The association warns of possible industrial action if attacks continue beyond May 2026.
