Can Christianity and Geology Be Reconciled on Earth’s Age and Biblical Events?
The Chicxulub crater in Mexico is a roughly 180-kilometre-wide impact structure formed about 66 million years ago when a large asteroid struck the Yucatán Peninsula. Scientists link the impact to the mass extinction that ended the age of dinosaurs and many other species. As a Christian and a geologist, I find it difficult to reconcile evidence from geology and archaeology with a strictly 7,000-year-old Earth. Can events such as the Chicxulub impact be meaningfully connected to the biblical account of Noah’s flood, or should they be understood as separate scientific and theological questions? I also wonder whether future events, such as the Sun becoming a red giant in billions of years, can be related to beliefs about the Rapture and Christ’s second coming. Faith should not prevent curiosity, especially since many inventions once opposed by some religious leaders, including aeroplanes, are now widely accepted and used.
