UEFA vice-president Laura McAllister says the body is searching for a credible candidate to challenge FIFA president Gianni Infantino at next March’s election. She said UEFA wants a candidate who can unite football confederations around governance reforms, rather than mount a symbolic opposition campaign. The proposed reforms include greater transparency, accountability, conflict-of-interest safeguards, whistleblower protection and more diversity in leadership. McAllister added that some UEFA member associations have withdrawn support for Infantino. The debate has intensified following opposition to a proposal that could allow private investors to buy a stake in FIFA competitions, including the World Cup.
