Blood Tonic: Does It Really Increase Your Blood?
Many people take blood tonic whenever they feel tired, weak or pale. Most tonics contain iron, sometimes with folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin C. These nutrients help the body make red blood cells, but they do not simply “add blood” to the body. Tiredness is not always caused by iron deficiency. Malaria, infections, poor sleep, stress, worms and other health conditions can cause similar symptoms. Iron may not help if low blood is caused by another condition, including some inherited blood disorders. A PCV or haemoglobin test can help confirm whether you are anaemic and guide treatment. Iron-rich foods include beans, liver, ugu, spinach, fish and red meat. Vitamin C can support iron absorption, while tea and coffee may reduce it when taken close to an iron supplement. Seek medical care promptly for persistent weakness, dizziness, breathlessness or marked paleness. Too much iron can cause stomach upset, constipation and other health problems.
