Peter Obi’s 2023 Run Helped Split the PDP Vote, Benefiting Tinubu
I argue that Peter Obi’s move from the PDP to the Labour Party reshaped the 2023 presidential election and indirectly benefited Bola Tinubu. Before Obi’s exit, I believe the PDP had stronger structures in much of the South-South and South-East, while the APC’s established northern network gave Tinubu a major advantage. Obi’s candidacy drew significant support from former PDP voters, especially in the South and parts of the North-Central. In my view, this split reduced Atiku Abubakar’s chances of consolidating opposition votes. Tinubu ultimately won with about 8.8 million votes, ahead of Atiku’s 7 million and Obi’s 6.1 million. Tinubu supporters who dismiss Obi should recognise that the division of the opposition played a major role in the outcome. I believe a similar realignment could shape the 2027 election.
