FRSC Arrests Driver Accused of Hiding 15 Passengers and Eight Motorcycles in Canter

The Federal Road Safety Corps has arrested a Mitsubishi Canter driver accused of transporting 15 passengers and eight motorcycles under a sealed tarpaulin in the Federal Capital Territory. FRSC officials said they inspected the vehicle after becoming suspicious and found the passengers and motorcycles concealed among goods. The driver was also accused of offering a marshal a ₦500 bribe and failing to produce a valid driver’s licence. He and the vehicle occupants were handed over to the police in Mararaba for investigation and possible prosecution. In a separate case in Abia State, a mobile court sentenced a commercial driver to one month in prison for driving without a valid licence. The driver reportedly fled while being taken to court but was later rearrested by FRSC personnel with military support. The corps warned commercial drivers against overloading, concealing passengers, evading enforcement and driving without valid licences.

How does a vehicle carrying 15 passengers and eight motorcycles get far enough for officials to only notice after suspicion?

Exactly, a load like that raises serious questions about checks and enforcement along the route.

A sealed tarpaulin may hide the load, but it also sounds like a frightening and unsafe way for passengers to travel.

The arrest is important, but attention should also go beyond the driver to why people accept such risky transport arrangements.
