Questions Raised Over ₦81.2bn Contract for Zamfara’s Gusau-Magami-Dansadau Road
The Zamfara State Government has awarded the reconstruction of the 108km Gusau-Magami-Dansadau road to Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company Limited for ₦81.2 billion. This works out to about ₦751.85 million per kilometre. Critics argue that the project cost is higher than published benchmarks for rural laterite roads, which they place at between ₦250 million and ₦400 million per kilometre. At the upper estimate, 108km would cost about ₦43.2 billion, leaving a difference of roughly ₦38 billion from the contract sum. The concerns have prompted calls for the Zamfara government and the contractor to clarify the road’s scope, design standard, terrain requirements, drainage works, security costs and procurement process. Residents say the road is important for community access and security, but insist that public spending must be transparent and provide value for money.
