Table Tennis Defensive Strokes: Push, Chop, Block and Lob
Defensive strokes help table tennis players stay in rallies and turn pressure into an attacking opportunity. The push adds backspin and keeps the ball low, while a longer push may invite an opponent to loop the ball. A chop is a heavier backspin return played farther from the table. It can be difficult to attack because the spin makes the ball dip sharply. Players can also vary a chop with no-spin or sidespin. A block uses the opponent’s pace by placing the racket in the right position immediately after the bounce. A defensive lob sends the ball high with spin, forcing the opponent to judge its height, direction and bounce carefully.
