Does Bad Santa Reinforce a Racial Double Standard in Its Treatment of Marcus?
I believe Bad Santa presents an uncomfortable contrast between Willie and Marcus. Willie is portrayed as violent, unstable and criminal, yet the story gives him trauma, emotional growth and a chance at redemption. Marcus is shown as competent and controlled, but receives little backstory before being positioned as the villain who faces prison. I also find the reported casting experience of Tony Cox relevant to this reading. The account claims he faced repeated auditions, resistance from studio executives and a low salary offer before winning the role through his performance and support from the director and lead actor. To me, the film raises questions about who Hollywood allows to be complex, forgiven and given a future. It also prompted a wider conversation about African identity, colour terms and the effects of colonial ideas about race.
