Aston Villa Beat Club Brugge 3-2 in Champions League Opener
Aston Villa ended their early-season scoring drought with a thrilling 3-2 Champions League victory over Club Brugge in Belgium. John McGinn opened the scoring with a first-time finish after Pau Torres drove forward from defence. Club Brugge levelled through Hugo Vetlesen, but Emiliano Buendia restored Villa’s lead within three minutes after good work from Joao Gomes. Nicolas Jackson added Villa’s third after beating goalkeeper Yann Sommer to Torres’ long pass and finishing into an empty net. Nicolo Tresoldi converted a late penalty for Brugge after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was judged to have handled the ball, but Villa held on. McGinn’s goal also made him Aston Villa’s all-time leading scorer in UEFA competitions.
