FG Warns 80 Million Nigerian Children May Be Exposed to Lead Poisoning
The Federal Government says an estimated 80 million Nigerian children may be exposed to lead, a toxic substance that can cause serious health and developmental problems. Speaking in Abuja during the 2026 International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, said children, pregnant women and women of childbearing age are especially vulnerable. He warned that exposure may not produce immediate symptoms. The government has launched a Five-Year Strategic Plan on Lead Poisoning Elimination for 2026 to 2030. Possible sources include contaminated soil, unsafe water pipes, lead-based paint, toys, some cosmetics, pottery and traditional remedies. Health officials urged families to maintain good hygiene, clean children’s toys regularly and take care when handling materials that may contain lead. UNICEF also stressed that no level of lead exposure is safe for children.
