Intersociety Warns of Surge as 1,402 Christians Killed and 1,800 Abducted in 96 Days
The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law reports that from January 1 to April 6, 2026, at least 1,402 Christians were killed and 1,800 abducted across Nigeria. This marks an increase of 350 deaths and 110 abductions compared to its previous 78-day assessment. The group attributes the violence to armed insurgent groups and alleges inaction or complicity by state actors. On average, 15 people are killed and 20 abducted daily, with a spike during Christian Holy Week. Attacks occurred in Borno, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa and Benue, targeting villages, places of worship and homes. Intersociety warns that 10% of abducted victims may die in captivity due to injuries and neglect. It expresses solidarity with internally displaced persons and highlights a charity sheltering over 4,500 displaced people while supporting their education. The organisation calls on government and international partners to step up security measures and increase funding for shelters and rehabilitation programmes.
