How Zamfara Says It Is Funding a ₦75bn Gusau Airport While Reducing Debt
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration says it is financing major projects while avoiding new commercial bank loans. The projects include the Gusau International Airport, roads, schools, health facilities and markets. BudgIT figures cited in the report show that the state’s public debt fell from ₦136.70 billion in 2023 to ₦104.42 billion by December 2024. The government says the reported ₦14.26 billion borrowing is the outstanding balance on a ₦20 billion bond issued by the previous administration for the airport project. The administration attributes its approach to higher internally generated revenue, tighter spending and development partnerships. Zamfara’s IGR reportedly rose from ₦6.51 billion in 2022 to ₦22.16 billion in 2023, while a proposed lithium investment in Zurmi could create jobs and expand future revenue if implemented. The key test will be whether the strategy delivers completed projects, improved security and better public services without creating unsustainable obligations for future administrations.
