A Guide to Common Swimming Strokes
Swimming uses different strokes for racing, recreation, training and water safety. The four main competitive strokes are freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. Recreational swimmers may also use the sidestroke, dog paddle and survival backstroke. The survival backstroke helps a person stay afloat while conserving energy, making it useful in lifesaving situations. Swimmers can also adapt strokes to train the arms or legs separately, or to accommodate injuries, amputation or paralysis.
