Why Is FG Budgeting N15.13bn for 39 SUVs Amid Borrowing and Higher Taxes?

I read that the Federal Government’s 2026 budget reportedly includes N15.13 billion for 39 SUVs under an empowerment programme, alongside N947.70 billion for 2,579 empowerment projects. Since then, I have struggled to understand the priorities behind this spending. We are being told that the country needs more revenue, while taxes are expanding and many people are already struggling with rising costs. I work remotely, and earning online is no longer as easy as it used to be. Yet I still pay VAT and may face income tax of up to 24 percent, while households continue to fund essentials that government should help make affordable, including electricity, fuel, water, security and children’s education. If the government is borrowing heavily and asking citizens to pay more tax, why spend about N15 billion on 39 luxury SUVs? Must public officials use vehicles that cost hundreds of millions of naira each? Why not buy more modest and durable vehicles instead? I genuinely want supporters of the administration to explain this. How can a country described as cash-strapped afford such expensive official vehicles while most Nigerians cannot afford even a basic car?
