FCCPC Warns Bakeries Against Underweight, Mislabelled and Unsafe Products
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has warned bakeries and confectionery businesses against misleading claims, underweight products and unsafe production practices. At a stakeholders’ forum in Lagos, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello said consumers must receive products that match the stated ingredients, weight, size, quality and value. He noted that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act requires businesses to give accurate information on labels and product materials. The commission said it is concerned about the safety of baked goods because they are consumed daily by millions of Nigerians, including children. Bakeries were urged to improve quality control, traceability, labelling and storage practices. Bello said the FCCPC will continue to engage operators but can sanction businesses whose products or practices endanger consumers or violate consumer rights.
