Kenya and Nigeria Dominate Bloomberg’s 2026 List of African Startups to Watch
Bloomberg’s second annual Africa Startups to Watch list for 2026 spotlights 25 companies solving critical gaps across the continent. Kenya and Nigeria lead with four entries each, showcasing homegrown innovation in transport, healthcare, fintech, and defence. Kenya’s quartet includes BuuPass, which digitises informal travel bookings; Leta, a logistics optimisation platform; Oye, offering insurance and credit embedded in fuel purchases for motorcycle taxi riders; and WorkPay, a pan-African payroll and HR solution backed by Visa and Y Combinator. Nigeria’s group features 10mg Health, providing financing for upfront medical treatment; Remedial Health, streamlining pharmacy and hospital supply chains; Sycamore, a regulated digital lending platform; and Terra Industries, a defence-tech startup building drones and security systems to counter Sahel‐region threats. The full list spans 14 other African nations, from solar-powered hearing aids in Botswana to biochar production in Somalia. It reflects a shift toward local funding and solutions, as nearly half of this year’s investment came from African investors.
